Subperiosteal Implants

For some patients, Dr. Baxter and Dr. Hogan can provide a tooth replacement solution that is available in very few dental offices. Specifically, patients who are unable to wear dentures because the bone deterioration has exposed sensitive nerves in the gums and lower jaw. Dr. Baxter speaks on the topic:

"This is an exciting time in the world of Dental Implantology. All the implant procedures we do at my office are great, but this new method is fantastic. Something can finally be done for the patient with little bone. It involves the use a CAT Scan to gather pre-surgery information about the lower jaw. With the CAT Scan images, we create three dimensional models that actually help us to eliminate one complete surgery from the dental implant process."

People with atrophy of the lower jaw benefit from this procedure the most. Atrophic lower jaws means that the bone has receded to a smaller position, unfit for placement of the more common types of implants. However, the subperiosteal implant is designed to rest on top of the bone and under the gums averting the dilemma of insufficient bone. In the procedure, a dentist will expose the jawbone and take an impression or model of the bone using special materials. Our method avoids this initial surgery by ordering a special CAT scan of the jawbone. Using the CAT scan data and advanced three dimensional modeling techniques, a model of the jawbone is constructed. The model is used by a dental laboratory to fabricate the custom subperiosteal implant to fit the jaw. A single surgical procedure exposes the jawbone and the implant placed. The gums are closed with stitches and the replacement teeth are placed. Dr. Hogan or Dr. Baxter will be happy to sit down and help you determine your best option for implant reconstruction.
